Construction of Individual Sanitary Lavatories |
The unhygienic atmosphere in villages is caused due to open defecation and urinating in public places. This not only spreads diseases but also damages the self-respect and dignity of women. As of 2016, there were only 30 toilets for 300 families in both Ghanasara and Kadamu villages. Grameena Vikas Sangham has found that the construction of personal toilets and encouraging people to use them properly is the only solution to this problem. Therefore, GVS began with organizing awareness meetings with women in these villages. They discussed the need of individual toilets, severity of the sanitation problem and how it affects the dignity of women. As a result, all the women pledged for the construction of personal toilets. The construction of each toilet costs around Rs. 20000. As the amount of Rs. 12000 provided by the government to construct one toilet is not sufficient, GVS has handed over Rs. 5000 worth of asbestos sheets, door, commode, tiles and cleaning kit to encourage the villagers to construct these lavatories. As a result, 104 people in Ghanasara village and 40 more in Kadumu village completed construction of individual toilets. Gradually the villagers got accustomed to using them. Hence, the village of Ghanasara in Bhamini Mandal has got recognition as the "Open defecation free village". A clean atmosphere has been restored in the villages. |
